Inquirer Publicizes Gun Violence

Philadelphia Inquirer spotlights city’s struggle with gun violence.

Roxanne Little was nestled on a white leather sofa in South Philadelphia, reading a novel, when she heard an alarming noise outside.

Pop. Pop. Pop. Pop.

"After the fourth pop, I actually realized it was gunshots," she said in a recent interview. Little, 17, rushed outside in the 2100 block of Sigel Street to grab her 4-year-old daughter, Nashay, and pull her to safety inside the home. They sat down on the sofa.

"I looked down and saw all this blood," Little said. "She just sat there with a blank look on her face."

Nashay had been struck in the leg with a bullet. Shay Shay, as her family calls her, had been caught in the middle of the gun battle between two teenage boys. She nearly bled to death that day, June 13.
